Turned marketing from an unmeasured cost into a funded growth engine.

Twenty years in direct-to-consumer growth, acquisition through retention. At a $1.27B retailer, grew the marketing budget from $1M to $4.5M by building the attribution the business never had, then produced its first blended CAC of $30 against a $300 LTV.

Set the bar first. Then let the number decide.

Every channel, creative concept and test carried two things written before launch: a threshold to clear and a point at which it got killed. Ten numbers that moved, each plotted against the bar or baseline it was judged from. Select any row for the mechanism behind it.

Metric Movement Result
Mechanism

A direct Yelp first-party data deal was held to a 5x ROAS floor set before any spend went out. It returned over 20x, proven in two DMAs before the channel was scaled across every US brand.

Mechanism

Retired a make-an-offer plugin that was not converting and added in-cart coupon codes. Conversion went from 1 percent to 4 percent on Shopify.

Mechanism

Average order value moved from $500 to $900, and monthly revenue carried past $200K across Shopify and eBay Marketplace.

Mechanism

Budget followed proof. Attribution came first, and the funding argument stopped being a matter of taste once the channel could be shown to pay.

Mechanism

Built the paid search channel from nothing to 200,000 sessions a month, up 150 percent year over year from 2023 to 2025.

Mechanism

Scaled the EZ+ loyalty program globally from 1.5 million to 7 million members, including a Latin America launch.

Mechanism

Converted one-time buyers into repeat loan-plus-purchase customers through lifecycle campaigns on the Bloomreach integration, moving 600,000 people from 20 to 30 percent of a 6 million base.

Mechanism

Brought paid media in-house across paid social, search, metro out-of-home and mobile-ID retargeting. Channel targets were set off lifetime value with GA4 measurement built to enforce them.

Mechanism

Class enrollment CPA in the best market, off the same in-house move plus Zapier-to-CRM auto-enrollment the prior agency never had. A six-week cycle delivered 10,000 new client signups.

Mechanism

Cost per qualified lead of $25 against a $900 retainer value, at 1,000 qualified leads a month, through a native Yahoo DSP channel built and run in-house. Qualification ran as owned infrastructure: a round-the-clock contact center, Five9 telephony, Salesforce intake and nurture to a signed outcome.

The bars that were written before launch.

Five new creative concepts per brand went out monthly against named segments. Only winners that cleared every gate below were scaled. A Reddit program running at 10x the cost-per-lead benchmark was paused after one week.

The Machine

Owning the technical layer, not just the brief.

CDP procurement through deployment. Pixel implementations rebuilt so attribution finally told the truth. Generative tooling put to work where it changes unit economics, not where it makes a slide. Marketing leaders who can only brief the work stay hostage to whoever builds it.

The Thesis

Budget follows proof. Build the attribution first, and the funding argument makes itself.

Emily Hamner

Most growth problems get framed as a creative problem or a channel problem. More often the business simply cannot see what it is buying. At EZCORP the spend ran without a blended CAC, so every request for more budget was an argument about taste.

Directing a LiveRamp and Cuebiq identity-resolution build tied online media to in-store sales and produced the first blended CAC the company ever had, $30 against a $300 LTV. The budget went from $1M to $4.5M because the number made the case, not because the deck did.

Retention is the other half of the same equation. Replacing paper loan reminders with triggered SMS, email and WhatsApp journeys moved $300K out of print and into advertising, and the same lifecycle work moved 600,000 customers into the highest-value segment.

Generative tooling belongs in the same frame. AI-generated creative earns its place by testing more variants at no added cost, and probability-scored audiences earn theirs by aiming spend at the customers most likely to move up a tier. The test is the unit economics, never the novelty.

Twenty years across ecommerce, subscription, membership and high-volume consumer acquisition in regulated categories come down to one non-negotiable habit: write the bar down before the money goes out, then honor it.
